A few weeks back, I had the privilege of attending a Home Depot DIY event, co-hosted by Jennifer from Rambling Renovators! It a really fun morning and I learned a few things that I can share with you;)
The first DIY project was making your own herb garden in a planter, fun! I do have dreams of having my own garden built up in my backyard but it will have to wait until next year. I never thought about making one in a planter, this was perfect as we are moving into our new kitchen soon, so I will be cooking a lot this summer!
Sylvain from Home Depot started off by telling us to get good potting soil, organic plant food, gardening tool, 4 herbs and a planter. If your planter doesn’t have any holes in the bottom, you will need drill 4 holes.
1.If your planter doesn’t have any holes at the bottom, you will need to drill 4 holes for some drainage
2. Fill your planter about 3/4 full with the potting soil
3. Place the 4 herbs where you want them, then take them out of the container
4. Start spreading the potting mix around the herbs until you get to the top of the roots
5. Spread about 1 tbsp of planting food around the plants
6. Water, place in a sunny spot!
Pretty easy, eh? So far I don’t see any tomatoes but my little garden still looks good!
Some tips from Sylvain- Living in a condominium shouldn’t exclude you from starting your own herb garden, you can do this with the right planter box. Keep your new planter away from wind (I didn’t know this?), winds can dry out vegetables/herbs quickly. Make sure you water every other day and add some plant food once as month because he said, just like us, plants need more than water!
